Teacher Spotlight

Congratulations to Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching 2009 State Finalists

DANA DAWSON
Dana Dawson is our 2009 math state finalist.  Dana teaches 8th grade Connected Mathematics at Edgewood Middle School in Moriarty where she has been teaching since 1996.  Dana has many teaching specialties some of them include:  working with at-risk students, pioneering standards-based classroom assessments and spearheading a school site Professional Learning Community.  Through Dana’s instructional practices, student achievement has risen and students have become committed to their own learning.  Dana believes that ALL students can learn and that all should learn.

VINCE CASE
The 2009 State Finalist in Science is Vince Case.  Vince teaches at School on Wheels Alternative High School, a unique, school-to-work program in the Albuquerque Public Schools. Teaching assignments are not traditional and operate much like a one-room school house where teachers (called "team leaders") work closely with a group of 16-20 students (called "team members") on integrated, concept, and standards-based projects that connect several subject areas. Vince is currently teaching and collaborating with two colleagues on an Environmental Studies course that incorporates Environmental Science, Biology, basic Statistics and Data Analysis, Language Arts, Government, Economics, and New Mexico History standards-based lessons.

Program Spotlight

Congratulations to the Supercomputing Challenge celebrating their 20th year of providing exciting opportunities for NM students!

The Supercomputing Challenge is an exciting program that offers a truly unique experience to students in our state. The Supercomputing Challenge is a program encompassing the school year in which teams of students and a sponsoring teacher define and work on a single computational project of their own choosing. Throughout the program, help and support are given to the teams by their project advisors and the Supercomputing Challenge organizers and sponsors. The Supercomputing Challenge is open to all interested students in grades 6 through 12 on a non-selective basis. The program has no grade point, class enrollment or computer experience prerequisites.
