National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only nationally representative, continuing assessment of what America’s students know and can do in various subject areas. Since 1969, assessments have been conducted periodically in reading, mathematics, science, writing, history, geography, and other subject areas. NAEP is also known as The Nation’s Report Card.

The NAEP only collects information related to academic achievement and no data is reported at the district, school, or student level except in the Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) Districts. NAEP guarantees the privacy of individual students, their families, and their schools. It is a survey designed to produce national and state level results; it is NOT a testing program for individual students or schools.

NAEP Components:

The NAEP assessments administered most frequently are known as the main NAEP. Every two years, reading and mathematics are assessed at the national and state level at grades 4 and 8. Every four years, reading and mathematics are assessed at the national level at grade 12. Also, every 4 years, science and writing are assessed at the national level at grades 4, 8, and 12, and at the state level at grades 4 and 8 on an alternating schedule.

Long-term trend NAEP measures student performance at the national level in reading and mathematics over time, using questions and question formats that have remained relatively unchanged from 1969 to the present. The long term trend assessment is administered to 9-, 13-, and 17-year-olds.

Starting in 2002, NAEP began the first NAEP assessment at the district level, on a trial basis, the Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA). In 2005, the number of TUDA districts is ten. The NAEP results for the District of Columbia are included with the NAEP state assessment results and with the TUDA district data.
