The 2007 revision:
New Mexico Content Standards, Benchmarks, and Performance Standards:
Visual & Peforming Arts K-12
October 1, 2007
This revision of New Mexico’s Visual and Performing Arts Standards is the culmination of the dedicated work of many accomplished fine arts educators from all around the state. Our beginning meetings focused upon the needs of New Mexico’s eighty-nine school districts’ diverse delivery models for arts education. Our consensus was that we needed to make this update a very user friendly document.
The eight common Content Standards for the arts, adopted as regulation, are the strong overarching goals for visual and performing arts education in New Mexico. They are presented here in four Strands: Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts.
Each Strand is organized into elementary, middle school and high school sections with their corresponding Benchmarks and grade level targeted Performance Standards. Behind each strand is a glossary for easy reference.
In the electronic version, on the page after the table of contents is a hyperlinked table of all eight Content Standards, for each Strand, at all grade levels. Throughout the electronic version vocabulary terms are hyperlinked to the glossary definitions.
This was a work of creativity and passion from the hearts and minds of many gifted and dedicated visual and performing arts teachers. I want to express my gratitude to them and thank them for the hundreds of hours of work they put into this process.
Although this work has been distributed electronically statewide for comment and input as it was being reconstructed we are asking for your input on this version during a ninety day period prior to final adoption. Simply email me at the address below with your comments, concerns and suggestions. Please write Standards & Benchmark Revisions in the subject line of your correspondence.
